Q&A WADA Presidency

What do WADA’s Statutes say about the Agency’s presidency and vice-presidency?

WADA’s Statutes stipulate that members of the Foundation Board are appointed for a period of three years, and that they may be re-appointed for further three-year periods. Members are appointed by their respective group of stakeholders—the Olympic Movement and Governments. There is a rotation policy which ensures that one third of the members’ terms end annually.

WADA’s Foundation Board appoints the president and the vice-president from its members or from outside its structure. WADA’s Foundation Board is composed in equal parts of representatives from the Olympic Movement and from governments. There are currently 36 WADA Foundation Board members, plus a president and a vice-president.

Who can be nominated for these positions?

WADA’s Foundation Board members are nominated by each of the two sets of stakeholders—the Olympic Movement and Governments.

What is the procedure for the appointment of the president and the vice-president?

The protocol established is for Governments and the Sports Movement each to establish a process whereby they nominate one candidate to be appointed by WADA’s Foundation Board to the president and vice-president positions respectively based on the principle of rotation.

What is the current status of nominations?

A circular was sent by WADA management to all members on 4 June 2013 outlining the procedure and calling for nominations. The deadline for proposal of candidates for the positions expired on 19 September 2013 and the following nominations were received:

  • Chair – Sir Craig Reedie, IOC
  • Vice Chair – Rev. Makhenkesi Stofile, South Africa

WADA Statutes see article 7.
